Topic: Album review #37: Elliott Smith, X/O

Elliott Smith quietly offed himself around 12 years ago and I became a fan of his only after that event. Therefore I never got to see this rare, if strung-out, soul live in concert, but I have enough bootlegs to know that live is where his talent really flourished.
But on disc too, his unique, ethereal voice cuts deep. His acoustic finger-picking style was rightly infamous during his short life, and on this - his 4th album, and first for a mainstream label - it is put to impressive use on tracks such as Pitselah and Tomorrow Tomorrow. Highlights are Waltz #2 ("I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow" is a great line), Everybody Cares Everybody Understands, and the a capella (and effectively his suicide note) I Didn't Understand.
This isn't his best album. I'll review that one later when I do my top 10 (which will be reviews 40-50), but it is a great album.
8/10
