Neal Morse was the principle song-writer of prog band Spock's Beard up until 2003, when his infant daughter Jayda was - to his mind - miraculously healed of a heart defect. Thereafter he converted to Evangelical Christianity, left the band, gave up his heavy-drinking and heavy-living days, and has spent the last 12 years putting out a string of Christian prog albums.
Doesn't sound too promising, does it? And to be sure, although I have no issue with anyone who wants to believe in a God - whatever gets you through it all is my motto - this very American brand of smug ego-driven Christianity is very grating after a while.
The problem is, the music is so jaw-droppingly incredible. There are 4 tracks on this album, the first one ('The Door') clocking in at half an hour. It has a staggering guitar solo by Paul Gilbert at the end, and former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy does excellent work throughout on the skins.
This is a concept album about the life of Martin Luther and his 95 Theses. If you can tune out the patronising lyrics and the endless guff about Jesus wanting to save you, the music here is astonishing.
