Difficult to categorise this one. It falls somewhere within the doom/death/black/folk/post metal genres.
In brief this is an atmospheric masterpiece. Dense layers of electric guitars, the occasional passage of folk acoustic, pounding drums, spare use of vocals. The whole thing drips melancholia. It's an album to listen to alone while looking out the window at a steady snowfall. Or while walking in some foggy and rain-swept hills. The final track on this album is essentially white noise but it's weirdly moving and such a perfect way to end this unique musical journey.
A hidden gem of a record, very highly recommended.

Normally I hate your reviews, but this time I think you did a decent job, or at least made a grate selection. 'The Mantle' is still my favorite work by Agalloch, but 'Ashes Against the Grain' is superb. Try giving Nebelung a listen.

It's not a burn a cross in your front yard and string a rope from a tree sort of hate, but I have disliked most of them to date. That is to say I don't generally consider them worth reading, predominately because the work you usually select bores me, etc. Which is why I haven't commented on any until now.
