Due to be released on Friday, but it leaked a few days ago, this is Iron Maiden's 16th studio album and follow-up to their slightly formulaic and disappointing 2010 record The Final Frontier.
First things first Iron Maiden are the greatest metal band in music history. The run of albums from Number of the Beast through to Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son is a flawless and genre-defining body of work. Only Metallica's run of Kill through Justice comes close.
This new album (it's actually a double album) is definitely one of their better post-reunion records. The 18-minute album closer Empire of the Clouds is quite an original tune by Maiden's standards (there's lots of piano in it), Shadows of the Valley is an enjoyable note-for-note (almost) rip-off of their earlier classic Wasted Years. Tears of a Clown is a cringe-worthy (but musically excellent) tribute to Robin Williams.
This is a very fine effort for a group of old guys who've been at it now for almost 40 years. Does it break any new ground? Of course not. That's not what Maiden are about. But it's super-consistent and more than gives the fans what they want and expect.
8/10
