Topic: Album review #27: R.E.M, Reveal

+Anonymous A10.9 years ago #43,019

Over-shadowed by the success of Out of Time and Automatic For The People, the records that followed those 2 classics often don't get the attention they deserve.

Of the 3 great post-Automatic albums (New Adventures In Hi Fi, Up, and Reveal), Reveal is probably the finest. There are some absolutely beautiful songs on here, in particular I'll Take The Rain and the divine I've Been High.

There is much less 'rock' on this album. Peter Buck makes extensive use of his acoustic guitar, only occasionally plucking the Rickenbacker with those gorgeous arpeggios he's known for. Stipe's lyrics are at their most cryptic, but what a lovely, ethereal voice he has (had, I guess, since the band is officially no more).

A very pleasant late-summer listen.

7/10

@previous (D)
It could be an original post, you know. Also, some of us might enjoy some of OP's reviews. Also, tits or GTFO.

Monster has some great tracks (What's The Frequency Kenneth, Strange Currencies, I Took Your Name, and the criminally underrated Let Me In), but on the whole is a bit of a messy album. They tried to do something different, and I respect them for that, but they didn't quite pull it off. There's too much filler. The 3 albums they made after this had much more creativity in my opinion.

Document is the best of their early I.R.S releases. Superb album, every track a gem, but of course special mention needs to go to the classics - Finest Worksong, The One I Love, and It's The End Of The World...

Great band, and much missed.
