The often overlooked debut full-length from the band whose 2001 offering 'Lateralus' I earlier in these reviews described as the greatest metal album ever made.

Here we find the band in simpler territory. There are almost none of the complex arrangements, chord progressions and time signatures that characterised their later work (although Danny Carey still does some remarkable polyrythmic stuff on the drums). This is almost, dare I say it, a straight-forward rock album. Full of atmosphere though, and with some of the band's very best songs, such as Undertow, Sober and Prison Sex (a fine song about abusive relationships).

An undeservedly neglected gem of an album.
