Dotted throughout music history are a handful of albums which are said to have given birth to entire new genres of music. The Beatles' Sgt Pepper is credited with creating prog rock. Black Sabbath's debut is said to have inaugurated what we now call heavy metal. And so on.
But it's rare that a single album, running to just 39 minutes, and so obscure that almost nobody has even heard of it, is credited with having given birth to 3 separate genres: math rock, post rock, and even grunge.
This album has been cited as a major influence by everyone from Mogwai to Sigur Ros to Nirvana to Black Flag to Godspeed You Black Emperor to Rage Against The Machine to 65daysofstatic.
Is it as amazing as its legendary (underground) reputation would have you believe? No. The first example of anything is never the best example. But it is a wonderfully unique album, and the spoken word passages are as good as anything Godspeed have done.
Only 6 tracks on it. Highlight is the last one, Good Morning Captain, which has maybe the best bass line ever written (and was used brilliantly in the contraversial Harmony Korine film, 'Kids').
8/10
