In 1991, Guns n Roses - at that time the biggest rock band on the planet, despite having only released 1 album and an EP - found themselves with 30 new songs recorded. Rather than select the best 15 they decided instead to release everything, over 2 sprawling albums.

There's little doubt that had they combined the 2 into 1, choosing only the best tracks, this would have been one of the all-time classic albums. As it is, both records have their (very high) highs and (equally low) lows. The best tracks they ever wrote are on these albums (Estranged, Breakdown, November Rain, Coma, Civil War...), and also some of their most unlistenable shit (Get In The Ring, My World).

I've never really conected with their debut, Appetite for Destruction, I find it massively over-rated. But these 2 albums deserve the highest of praise if only for their ambition.

8/10 for both albums.

But "they" didn't do that, it was Geffen (record label) who were looking to milk the band for every last cent. The band themselves were insistent on putting out all 30 tracks.
