Godspeed are in my top 5 bands of all time, so naturally I was eagerly awaiting this studio recording of the 40-minute piece they've been playing live for a a couple of years already (called 'Behemoth')
This new disc is a brief one, and divided into 4 movements, the middle 2 being more of the noise/drone they explored on their previous album. The outer tracks are where the greatness of old is to be found.
I don't know. It's a very powerful work, I'll give it that much. It has none of the spine-chilling beauty of their masterpieces Lift Your Skinny Fists or F#A# Infinity, but in truth I'm not sure they were even aiming for that. This is a music for the end of time. At the centre of this album there is a single-note 4-minute drone, like a dead telephone line. The music collapses into nothingness, only to be slowly and painfully rebuilt in the final track.
It's definitely worth a listen. It can at least be said there's nothing quite like it. Fascinating album.
