Arguably the finest metal album ever produced. A complex, many-layered masterpiece. The real genius of this record is of course Danny Carey's drumming. Just listen to the finale of opening track, The Grudge, for an object lesson in technique counterpoised against emotion.

The cleverness entends to Maynard Keenan's typically abstruse lyrics, including those of the title track, which follow the rhythmic flow of the Fibonacci sequence (see the Wikipedia entry for this track for a detailed analysis of the mathematical foundations of this song).

An incredible, ingenius work of art.

I disagree. It has a few excellent tracks (Stinkfist, Aenema, 46&2) but generally there is far too much filler here, especially those pointless mood/experimental pieces which they dot throughout the album. And the much-lauded Bill Hicks tribute track (The Third Eye) just goes nowhere at all in all of its 14 minutes.
