I hate this part. :\

What's the best thing to say or do for someone who is losing a loved one? All I know to do is be there for them and try to comfort them... I don't think there really is anything else, but if you have an idea, or someone has done something nice for you that you appreciated while you were grieving, I'm open to suggestions.

She's a much older female, I think in her 70s, possibly early 80s, thin as a rail and smoked all of her life, and had another heart attack, now her organs are failing from what I understand. She was basically told she could pass at the hospital or home and she elected home. She was always a sweet woman and had a good sense of humor, but I've only met her a handful of times, so I can't really say much more about her. She is a grandmother to the main person I'm concerned about as far as the grieving bit goes.

Really it's a wonder she made it this long, but that's sort of what I thought... and I've already said that and more. She may get a chance to say goodbye, idk if that'll make it better or worse for her, I guess it just depends on what state her grandmother is in when she sees her.

In the last couple of years or so I went to two funerals. One was for my buddie's grandmother, the other for his dad. Really there's nothing you can say other than the usual "sorry for your loss". The one thing I did was volunteer and ended up driving several elderly people to and from the wake/funeral. Just offer your services to the family, it's probably what they need the most.

tell her you know that when we go through stuff like this...there are times we just can't function right because the grief saps the fight right out of us...and that if she finds herself in such a situation in the coming days and needs some help with something..you hope she remembers you are only a phone call away..

Actually offer them real help. Like hey buddy I know that you're too sad to cook so heres a pizza. Or I know that you're busy with the funeral arrangements, so i'll go to the bank for you. Stuff like that.
