Before Mt. Everest was discovered, what was the highest mountain in the world?
+On !Uvm54ORbmo — 11.4 years ago, 6 minutes later[T] [B] #449,240
The unnamed mountain that was named Mt. Everest after its discovery

This is similar to the question
When a tree falls in a forest and no one is around - does it make a sound.
The answer of course is YES - The tree produces sound waves so its not a matter of if anyone is around.
Mt. Everest was/is the tallest mountain discovered or not. Its just simple math.
Of course early on people of their part of planet Earth wood say they have the tallest mountain in the word because they were not aware of areas outside of their part of the planet

What if a tree falls and there's no air around?

Grrrrr
OK will go with this - Image is Tree turned to rock over eons and Trees have fallen down -
So one day when Earth looses all of its atmosphere and current trees end up petrified and they fall down then yes no sound.

Taking things too literally and having a shallow view of the world are symptoms of autism. As a person suffering form autism, syntax doesn't understand that the hypothetical about falling trees is an observation about the metaphysics of perception, not vibrations in the air.

It does come down to language.
Sound I just checked 5 dictionary's and only English - All defines end up as acoustic wave that stimulates the ear.
The Pretend Doctor is correct about
> waves would still travel through the ground
Are they sound waves
IF No one is around to hear them? Again a matter of who defines those waves and in USA their is a technical standards committee:
Sound is defined by ANSI/ASA S1.1-2013 as "(a) Oscillation in pressure, stress, particle displacement, particle velocity, etc., propagated in a medium with internal forces (e.g., elastic or viscous), or the superposition of such propagated oscillation. (b) Auditory sensation evoked by the oscillation described in (a)
Now ANSI is a USA organization. Other countries may have similar defines or
Others
Bottom line is the Frequencies produced are
SPECTRUM which wood be independent on creatures around to detect them.
So based on USA Defines of Sound at least as Merriam Webster defines - Requires a Creature with apparatus to detect sound. If such does not exist then the Tree falling in forest wood not produce a sound but wood produce Frequencies that CAN be defined as Sound waves.
Physics vs Language

Much has been debated in Philosophy which brings in Buddhist views of
I remember the famous Einstein question to Niels Bohr. Looked it up to be accurate about this.
Albert Einstein asked physicist Niels Bohr (One of the founding fathers of quantum mechanics) whether he realistically believed that 'the moon does not exist if nobody is looking at it.' To this Bohr replied that however hard he (Einstein) may try, he would not be able to prove that it does, thus giving the entire riddle the status of a kind of an infallible conjecture---one that cannot be either proved or disproved.
The possibility of unperceived existence - Metaphysics - can end up as Gobble-goop.

The question of sound is a little misleading. To fully appreciate the matter, ask yourself, if a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound in any circumstances. And that's where you have the discussion of what we mean by the word "sound".
Does a whistle whose frequency is too high to be heard by any animal's ears make a sound? A silent sound? That's like asking what the hues beyond violet look like on the rainbow (to normal human eyes). An invisible hue? Such oxymorons show the philosophy and cognitive psychology students to consider what is meant and to be careful with definitions.
