The first season is very mindfuck-ish.
You have to remember it's formatted like a children's show so that each episode can stand alone and be enjoyable even if you didn't see the previous episode. Season one mostly serves to introduce the various characters and how they interact with each other. Once you get to season two, you'll start to see more real story development.
