Sketchup is a good place to start I guess, there's a couple of extensions for drawing houses etc. Probably quite a few how to vids on yt to get you started as well. I've only used it briefly, because every program is free if you pirate it.

Are you going to do a site built home or is this just for shits and giggles? There's plenty of stuff out there for both floor plans and virtual mock ups but like Anon B said, piracy is the best policy.

Pretty much shits and giggles for now. I want to design a compound for friends and family. I'll lay it all out then study it for optimum community living.
It's been a lot of years since I've pirated. I'm assuming tor is the way to go now? I've never used it.

Noooo. Don't pirate via tor, it'd be slow as fuck anyway.
If this is all you're pirating I would even worry about a seedbox or a vpn or whatever. Just get µTorrent and something like Architect 3D. Still there's a lot of free stuff out there and demos to play with if you look around.
I wouldn't worry about ISP or DMCA complaints if you're just pirating this. It's not that srs.

Don't forget to post progress pictures.
I suggest working with pencil and paper to kick off design ideas first, and then learning to convert it to a digital format. Have you done any 3d modeling before? I'm self taught and reasonably good with solidworks because of online tutorials. I'd suggest using a program that you can find a tutorial for to get started, it can be quite daunting. Search for Lynda.com or just Lynda on thepiratebay or kickass.so they are great vids and really informative
