Okay, Matt -- you've asked for it and now you've got it. Presented below, in unexpurgated form, is the Poop-proof

Starting with the bottom line first Matt posted all of this logged in: Anonymous posting is not possible at GoKunming. This is where he first mentions that he has no issues with eating sewer oil which as we will see later in this document -- is an unsanitary product loaded with fecal matter, with the most unsavory origins imaginable.
Now for some preliminary info -- only a few of the 250,000 manufactures of this oil attempt to filter it at all. Most is put in huge drums or large cans for restaurant use and it does come out brown in color. Links are only for your quick reference and amusement.

Author comment: ‘’The Sewage oil is never filtered. The Oil floats to the surface of the sewage, and is scooped off with a hand ladle.

Home experiment - Rag towel /colth over a bowl and pour oil over the cloth and notice no oil flow. Cloth saturates and blocks flow.

The more established Western expats for the most part do not eat in Kunming restaurants because:

Sometimes you're better off drinking from a restaurant toilet than its carbonated drinks.
‘’’Ice cubes served in soft drinks can be dirtier than toilet water,’’’ an investigation by China's national television revealed on Monday.
A statement released by the Hainan provincial agriculture department on Monday said bacterial counts 13 times higher than toilet water and 18 times higher than the national standard, is the average after testing Kunming restaurants. The next phase of testing will include water used in food preparation.

Author note: Rinsing hands after washing in contaminated water and washing vegetables in contaminated water is another reason so many outsiders become ill. ‘’Imagine taking a shower in water with more bacterial then in your toilet’’

Finally, truth be told, if you stay in Kunming long enough, you no longer consider diarrhea to be an illness, just another part of eating out.

I have been sicker here from the food than any other city in China. I'm looking to get out of this town as soon as possible.

And, dear reader. this is where I get bogged down in word salad because for scientific technical presentations, it’s all about supporting documentation.
I was surprised by this -- and first, you need to know that Chinese food, Yunnan style differs from the rest of China by the huge amount of oil they cook and fry with as well as huge amounts of chile added, to basically dull food. Cooking oil thus ends up as the single most expensive ingredient a restaurant uses.

Now, finally some background as to how this subject came up on GoKunming:
Expats on GoKunming created a topic about a new McDonalds opening up. Most expats were thrilled at the opportunity to experience a clean, healthy, familiar taste of home. Matthew, of course, was displeased. Having been forced out of his home country with tax liens and bad debt, he has a visceral sour grapes reaction to anything that reminds him of his native land. Matthew wanted to know why anyone would eat at McDonald’s or KFC when “Chinese food is the world’s most exciting -- variety and the best”, to which expats countered with firsthand experience of Chinese restaurant food making them sick.

mmkunmingteacher • 5 months ago @BillDan, moreover, this "gutter oil" stuff that everyone keeps insisting is used at every restaurant, is malarchy. There have been a couple of scandals about restaurants using recycled oil (which Western restaurants do too, by the way).

But these have been scandals --- the authorities bust them and shut them down I see bottled, packaged oil being delivered to restaurants all the time.

To seriously make the argument that all local restaurants use human feces to cook in, is just silly, foreign, paranoid propaganda.

How some foreigners aren't too scared to even leave their apartments in the morning, boggles my mind.

Authors note: Ironic and hilarious because he appears afraid to leave his place on Friday and Saturday and Sunday evenings. Add Monday through Thursday evenings.
