What did Matt actually do? How do you know he avoided tax? In the UK if you have a huge tax bill they try to work out a deal, especially if your poor because you can't take what one doesn't have and sending someone to prison just costs the tax payer. Only huge tax avoiders who used fraud go to prison.

He moved to China because he couldn't get another teaching job in the US after he got caught writing sexual stories using the names of his students.

Svet that was pulled off of Lexus/Nexus the Legal data base one has to pay 4use except its easy access from any law library in any Law School in USA -
Nor does it include the interest and penalities which by now are HUGE - Except IRS is known for doing discounts on that part of the additions - but not on the base amounts owed
So yes they will work out a deal and even in some cases it goes away - but only if you file and or leave a valid forwarding address. This one according to my Cousin who b attorney that does do biz tax and his office is filled with lawyers who do IRS stuff including as once working for them - Indy's ain't going away. IRS put out to many letters of warning to address that did exist and were occupied so they look at that as never going away.
