Topic: Ocean Phenomenon San Diego last couple of days Surfers encounter what looks like large black Whales
+Syntax — 12.1 years ago #36,673

Viewed this on news last night - Huge dense masses of Anchovies a pizza lovers dream. Local Fishermen cannot catch anything do to fish feeding to the max on the schools of tiny critters.
I was in Surfing at break of dawn today and came out about 9AM on a very calm 2 calm day. Peaceful very - Later when I went out for my daily beach run I viewed exactly as you see in Pic but thought it was a huge shadow from clouds except a few seconds later it occurred to me NO CLOUDS at that momento - Stopped and watched mass of Anchovies jumping and boiling out of water and then Dolphins came in to dine. Critters were trying to nibble on Surfers - One of my friends later said that he and the others thought a huge number of Whales were moving in on them cause it was just so dense - a moment of fear for all - If I had it all to do over I wood have tossed off shoes and gone in for a swim with the critters- Plan is 2morrow to check with life guards and locate them and drive to locations to swim or Surf with them

An amazing online video captured the largest traveling group of anchovies seen off the coast of San Diego in 30 years.
Researchers Julia Fiedler, Sean Crosby and Bonnie Ludka from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography
- at the University of California, San Diego in La Jolla, Calif. - discovered the school of fish near the institute on Tuesday. (The fish can be seen beginning at the 2:10 mark).
The organization said it have not seen such a movement of the fish in more than 30 years and is unsure why they are traveling from the coast into shallow waters.
The researchers did collect samples of the fish for the Scripps Marine Vertebrate Collection, which has assembled about 2 million samples of fish.

The jealous are troublesome to others, but a torment to themselves.

There are plenty of benefits to living near the beach; you get to enjoy the sand, warm waters, scenic sunrises and sunsets any day of the year.

You only get either a sunrise or a sunset, depending on which coast you live. Not both

The Earth rotates at an angular velocity of 15°/hour, therefore the expression \omega_\circ \times \frac{\mathrm{hour}}{{15}^\circ} gives the interval of time before and after local solar noon that sunrise or sunset will occur on east coast or west coast.

You can still get a scenic sunrise on the west coast. Just not over the ocean.
