Topic: Taking back English
+Anonymous A — 12.1 years ago #36,527

This is a ratchet. It is a tool used for tightening bolts in places where space for rotational movement is limited.
It is
not a synonym for gross, nasty, disgusting, repulsive, etc.
That would be
wretched.
What we have here is a case of 'smart' technology mixing with ignorance users and resulting in the widespread misuse of a word. Someone's toothless grandma saw them watching hoarders and described what she saw as wretched. This person then attempted to use the word while texting a friend, but failed to recognize the silent 'w' and tried to spell it starting with 'r'. Not knowing the conventions of English spelling, they stumbled to complete the word. Auto-correct recognized 'ratchet' as the closest valid match, and the person who didn't know any better went with it. When their friend asked what the heck they meant, they explained it and nobody questioned it any further.
But I'm here, not just to question it, but to put an end to the rampant lingual decay which plagues America. Restore proper vocabulary usage in the English language!

The Rules of Grammar
"I am almost sure by witness of my ear, but cannot be positive, for I know grammar by ear only, not by note, not by the rules. A generation ago I knew the rules
-knew them by heart, word for word, though not their meanings-and I still know one of them: the one which says---but never mind, it will come back to me presently."
"Great books are weighed and measured by their style and matter, and not the trimmings and shadings of their grammar."
"The Queen's English"
"There is no such thing as the Queen's English. The property has gone into the hands of a joint stock company and we own the bulk of the shares."
"Adjectives"
As to the Adjective: when in doubt, strike it out."
"Verbosity"
"I notice that you use plain, simple language, short words and brief sentences. That is the way to write English
-it is the modern way and the best way. Stick to it; don't let fluff and flowers and verbosity creep in. When you catch an adjective, kill it. No, I don't mean utterly, but kill most of them-then the rest will be valuable. They weaken when they are close together. They give strength when they are wide apart. An adjective habit, or a wordy, diffuse, flowery habit, once fastened upon a person, is as hard to get rid of as any other vice."

TC offers an option so one does not have to view such but that TC thingy requires a trip code which I no use so I configure my add ons to kill pics from him. Fails of course when he adds a brand new pic but those usually do not bug me so I let them go n sure nuff never see em again

I am not referring to the strict spelling conventions and sentence structure which you shun, but rather to the wholly improper use of distinctly different words which have no relation in pronunciation. Would and wood are identical when spoken- the proper spelling is a matter of syntactical origin which has little bearing on the reader's ability to understand what is being written.

Yes I fully agree n if u c me doing that call me out on it. Calling an apple a orange happens in communication and we all know someone is talking about some fruit.
Calling an Apple a Gay dude may also be calling him a fruit ...n I best stop there with my drivel
