Chew on this: the world’s first test tube burger

most-expensive hamburger: a $330,000 meat patty --- but created by a scientist, not a butcher.

It’s “in-vitro” beef --- animal tissue painstakingly grown in a laboratory from the stem cells of a cow. And on Monday, the first-ever burger made entirely from the synthetic meat will be cooked and served to a hand-picked crowd at a top-secret location in London.

The 5-ounce hamburger will be made entirely of beef cultivated by Prof. Mark Post. The Maastricht University tissue-engineering researcher has been working for two years on the project, which uses stem cells collected from slaughterhouse waste.

“Eventually, my vision is that you have a limited herd of donor animals which you keep in stock in the world,” Post told The Independent. “You basically kill animals and take all the stem cells from them. So you would still need animals for this technology.”

Creating the food is a painstaking process. It takes around 3,000 muscle strips - each the size of a grain of rice and grown separately - to create the final patty. The launch of the edible burger is already later than initially thought: Post initially believed his team would be able to deliver by November last year. Producing synthetic meat cheaply and easily looks to be still some way off.

But in theory, the process could eventually produce a million-times more meat from the stem cells of a single cow than you’d get from its carcass. Supporters say this will save the Earth’s environment from the impact of the growing demand for meat.

It sounds like a good idea but it'll take a while to develop. I don't think the first impressions of the all stem cell beef patty were all that favorable. The cattle industry will go apeshit with lobbyists to try and prevent people from consuming them anyway.

considering it still relies on the slaughtering of animals in order to obtain stem cells, I think the cattle industry would see this a profitable method of downsizing their large-scale operations and maximizing production.

Labs vs wot it takes in space and feed alone to raise animals. Not far from where I live there are drug companies with large buildings with vats of stuff growing to make drugs.

Me I still want something from a animal that roams n is lazy and happy b4 its slaughtered.

@411,739 (G)
The demand for cattle wouldn't be as substantial though, right? I'm assuming this would still negatively impact them but I am admittedly not an econfag.
