Think of it this way.
Most men admit that they would love to stay home possibly not understanding the work that needs to get done.
So when a woman stays home, they often keep themselves busy with things like cleaning the house, cooking the meals, watching over the children, and in their free time they take up hobbies.
But when a man thinks about staying home, they often want to do it so they could just laze around all day becoming a slob who plays their Nintendoes.
This doesn't go for all men of course, since there are men who choose to do the domesticated work and enjoy being there for their kids.
So it seems like gender roles were there to make sure the men remain productive sacrificing all potential the women have.

This seems to be pretty sound reasoning. However I would comment that the women haven't necessarily sacrificed all of their potential, as children require quite a bit of direction in rearing, which a mother can take pride in once the child becomes a well-adjusted adult.
