2014-05-21_15.10.28.pngSo, I've been out of Minecraft for awhile and decided to take it up again recently since class is over. I didn't want to jump in completely over my head, so I used old version 1.2.5 instead. I established my house at the intersection of a desert, a forest, and a jungle biome.

The house is fairly crude, just dirt and a wooden door, with a fence of cacti to keep out the monsters. I mined directly beneath the house in a 5x5 column, leaving blocks attached to the walls to serve as a spiral staircase. I also built a pen out front for raising livestock. Once I hit bedrock, I didn't really know what my next goal should be. I went poking around the minecraft wiki and found out about mycelium: a special kind of dirt that allows mushrooms to be planted in broad daylight, and spreads to other dirt blocks around it over time. Awesome!

New World_day_north.pngBut there's a catch. Mycelium only occurs naturally in mushroom island biomes, which are very rare. So, I'd need a program that could extrapolate my map's seed and show me where the nearest mushroom island was. Yeah, it's technically cheating, but I don't want to run around actually generating vast areas of map, and hoping to find one by pure chance. My computer slows down a lot when new parts are being generated, and it's much harder to figure out where you are in the map when it gets big. So I used a program to find a mushroom island and I compared that map to my current map and started running.

As it turns out, I'm no good at traveling 'as the crow flies'. Mountains are a pain to dig through diagonally, plus I didn't want to wear out my tools when I knew I'd need to survive several nights in foreign territory with just what I'm carrying with me. I certainly can't afford to die halfway because there's no way I'd be able to make it back to the exact spot I died at before my stuff de-spawns. So I ended up taking a messy path that forced me to re-render my overworld map several times to figure out where I was and how I needed to adjust my direction to get to my target destination.

My main house is circled in red and my destination in yellow-orange.

2014-05-17_14.22.10.pngI finally arrived at dusk, with just enough time to set up my home. Although, as it turns out, shelters aren't really a necessity since the only creatures that spawn there are mooshrooms. By the time I had made the crafting table, chest, door, and pressure plate, I was desperately short on wood so I planted a tree. You also have to put down buffer blocks around any dirt, otherwise the mycelium will spread to it and young trees planted there with pop up since only mushrooms can grow on mycelium.

2014-05-17_14.34.38.pngOnce my tree grew up, I was able to spare enough wood to outline a garden. After a while I stopped replanting the tree in the corner and made it into farmland like the rest. You can also see in a background the first makeshift garden I put down right at the waters edge. This wasn't such a great idea since the mooshrooms jumping out of the water there would stomp the ground and make it revert back to dirt which would soon be overtaken by the mycelium.

2014-05-17_18.04.06.pngI also sheared 2 of the mooshrooms in order to breed regular cows. Although the babies are supposed to follow a parent or adult of the same species, I noticed that baby cows will apparently also follow an adult mooshroom even when adult cows are readily present. In contrast, I have not seen any baby mooshrooms following an adult cow.
