I finally got a credit card today after years of being unable to get one due to bad debt. It's with HSBC and has a £5000 credit limit. My current bank tried to offer me one too but I told them to shove it. I no longer need to use my girlfriends debit card.

Work hard on keeping credit good.
I just switched to another rewards type credit card - Old one gave me 2% on grocery store purchases and 1% on everything else but capped out at $1500 per quarter.
New card is 1.5% cash back on all with no cap no limits - and gives me $100 at the end of my first three months.
Its been a full year since I have been able to grab a free $100 but in last 4 years I have taking in about $800 in Bank offers - Several bank accounts and cards.
Good credit can put Bank cash in wallet - not sure they do that in Britain?

And I think banks want you to fail. All those fees they can drag out of ya when one does.
