Topic: Time for my bi-yearly panic attack

tmp_1391576096670-1298251131.jpgWell, I've done it again. Another math class that I currently have a C- in and need a C or higher to pass. I posted here last time about my linear algebra and calculus 3 class and some helpful anons calmed my nerves.

Basically with Lin alg/calc 3 I was able to do a bunch of exercises and pass through memorizing formulas. Now I'm Ina math class that has tons of proofs and I'm fucked because I'm stupid. I have relatively shit idea making abilities and in general I'm a dumbass. Ive spent the past 3 days freaking out cuz I don't know shit. I am probably going to change majors if I can't pass this class to poli sci or something easy. It would kill me, but no more than having to retake the class. I've studied like 20+ hours for this exam and I'm still fucked. Ugh I hate myself for not doing shit earlier. Fuck

Thing is: Poli Sci is fun...Interesting...HowSomEver what can you do with it?

I suppose one could becum General Manager of a McDonalds restaurant. But you wood still have to start off flipping burgers 2get there.

> memorizing formulas

Really wot you're learning is the Process. Most who take Calculus never use it. They sure as hell have learned a lot about solving complex problems and this does translate to profitable daily work life Eventually One could argue that courses in Logic the classical Logic wood also get you there.

As Electronics Engineer who often solves linear ordinary differential equations & in school we used Calculus only 2learn later that its more easy to solve them using Laplace Transform to solve differential and integral equations. Much more easy n that Linear Algebra you larned? Laplace is far more Algebra then Calculus when you get to use it.

I have to still resort to Calculus cause in the real world of Engineering one discovers a great deal is Non-Linear but usually one still uses Laplace as much as possible and then thinks about 2nd n 3rd order effects and asks hey wot wood I discover if I did it the old fashioned way with Calculus.

And trust this as to memorize a formula. Sure for a class but in real life we Engineers look up the formula - but one still must no the process to solve it. And yes that is memory which there really is no way around such

Ah Fourier Transforms for time n Laplace for stop of time.

@previous (qew )
Yeah, this. Colleges offer it and if I took it I wouldnt have been such a failure

This is why I fucking hate math so much. There's lots of useful you can learn in the process but they never tell you that the process is the important part. It's a clusterfuck of time spent trying to understand things you don't actually use just to shape your mind into being able to think about stuff in a broader spectrum. Surely they can develop exercises for young children that can accomplish the same ends without involving the most irritating system ever created.

Why they'd have you memorize formulas when everywhere else in life you'd have them printed next to you or on the computer is fucking beyond me.

For me I ended up leaning in2 wanting to learn more math. As a kiddlet 11 years old I needed to learn Trig and basic Algebra to take an advanced FCC exam so I got an early start for my age - Now I think basic algebra is taught at age 11 - not sure.

However anyone who opens a book on Communication engineering discovers its all spelled out in differential and integral equations. Some text and then pages of Math. So I knew early on I was missing a great deal cause usually the text left me with more questions then answers.

In fact not understanding the Calculus caused me to waste a full year hobby wise perusing my attempts at making a secrete sub-carrier that others wood be unaware of.

The harder I worked at it the easier it was for others to simply decode. Later after learning Calculus I Said OH-Shit - One long equation told me all I needed to no that I wood never ever make my signal secrete.

Getting ready for Cinco de Mayo celebration but I did a quick look on web for Calculus made easy

http://www.wtv-zone.com/Angelaruth49/Calculus.html

Looked at a couple of others - AND AND What they still fail to do is give simple examples of why one wood need to know rate of change at any given point on a curve or exact area under a curve. (for example)

I think if they quickly gave some examples of great things one can do with this it might motivate a few to understand the process.

Yea I agree. For Engineering there are a few that are used so often - daily so its easy to learn those and never have to look up - Just a few basics.

end of the semester, shits almost over

edit: went to SI sessions towards the end; didn't ever do tutoring before so i didn't know what to do there. i was that kid that went there, didn't know anything about what to ask, and then left. idk

The thing is, I'm not bad at math. It just takes me a really long time. Plus they always want you to show your work, but I do it in my head and half the time the way I come up with the answer is a significantly different method than what they want me to use. And the method that they want me to use rarely makes any sense to me so if I'm forced to use that specific way, I can be stuck for hours (well, maybe 15 minutes max because I refuse to waste any more time than that on one problem) when I already know the answer and just can't express how I got there using the steps they want me to.

Hummmmmm way back I first took Algebra I got points on a test if I used the right process and still ended up with the wrong answer - This was good cause it emphasized process.

AND if it will make you feel any better Einstein did not do so well in Math in school and often employed Mathematicians to help him.

Out of here in Prep for party
