Check out this Minecraft server.
It's possibly the most weirdest yet well thought out servers I've encountered.
The basic premise of the entire server is that you're basically in a prison where you essentially play Minecraft as one normally would except with what they provide you. There are different areas called "Cell Blocks" which has an area specifically for mining that regenerates the blocks to a fresh state so there is always an endless supply. You mine these ores so you can sell them to make money and rank up. They have a furnace section for you to go to in order to smelt ores.
The whole thing is just strange yet very well structured and planned out.

It requires version 1.7.2 of Minecraft or higher which if you're using the newest launcher shouldn't be a problem.

I felt the same way, but still, this is a good server to make you question, "What the fuck am I doing?"
I get the feeling people go to this server because of it's community. Does seem like a nice one from my observation.
