can phone hardware get messed up from a simcard cos that sounds pretty made up to me

Simcard as with any electronic part can go bonkers.

However its only account info in it. Tells Rogers who u b. If bad it could stop your phone from connecting. Stop your billing but not in anyway effect the rest of the phone.

Hardware as hardware in no way can be damaged by bad Sim - Hardware will appear NOT to work with bad Sim but a new sim wood make Hardware work correctly.

If so which is possible (not common however unless you remove it a bunch and I mean a bunch as one reason for fail)

A new Sim for the same account should cost you next 2 nothing and when put in the phone should work 100% with all stuff you had in it as it was in past
