I think it's supposed to be a white lion, as in Durga's vahana/mount. Durga and Kali are different forms/aspect of the same thing (Shakti) as I understand it (when evil got out of control and was a threat to the gods, the hindu gods decided they needed to go Voltron force and form
China and India have had some cultural intermingling for over two millennia so it's easy to imagine how there might be some artistic influences.
