The Hunger Games as suggested by [REDACTED].
The
Great Grate God Pan by Arthur Machen
His novella 'The Great God Pan' (1890; 1894) has garnered a reputation as a classic of horror (Stephen King has called it "Maybe the best [horror story] in the English language").
"The Great God Pan" is a novella written by Arthur Machen. A version of the story was published in the magazine The Whirlwind in 1890, and Machen revised and extended it for its book publication (together with another story, "The Inmost Light") in 1894. On publication it was widely denounced by the press as degenerate and horrific because of its decadent style and sexual content, although it has since garnered a reputation as a classic of horror. Machen’s story was only one of many at the time to focus on Pan as a useful symbol for the power of nature and paganism. The title was possibly inspired by the poem "A Musical Instrument" published in 1862 by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, in which the first line of every stanza ends "... the great god Pan."

No wonder I kept getting error msgs. Forgot I was in text mode earlier when I was out for coffee. Also TC is blocked as 'pornography' on certain firewalls apparently.

Some of the
greatest gratest books of the English canon were written and published in the 1800s. If you're unwilling to read them because of their age, you're being a bit foolish, sir. I wasn't super thrilled with this novella after reading it, I think I had high expectations because of it though. It was about on par with some of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective works to me, still I can see hints of where it might have influenced Lovecraft, whose work is fantastic.
The only more recent material I've read lately apart from stuff for CEs has all been weird/experimental fiction and is... probably not for everyone.

Indeed. It's mind-boggling how many editors can't do their own jobs.
