Topic: Toothache

I was ment to have a back tooth removed a couple of months ago but since the antibiotics cleared up the infection and I felt better I blew the appointment off because I'm scared of the dentist. Now the infection is beck with a vengeance, strong pain killers are not working and even dabbing cocaine on the area does very little, it's so badly infected even touching the tooth with my tongue can make it hurt more.

I'm having it pulled this Wednesday and I'm being sedated for it, the tooth feels alive in my jaw like a foreign object. I almost want to get my toolbag out and yank it out myself but I know I'll fuck it up or chicken out. Anyway, I'll keep you all updated.

Cloves. Pack cloves between the tooth and the gums.

I think the infection and pain is too far for that. I can somewhat control it with nurofen plus and co codamol but the large codeine hit makes me feel sick. Also a little cocaine helps. Can't wait till it's out, thankfully I don't have work till next monday. My girlfriend is swimming for sports relief in a couple of hours and she expects to cheer her on but I'm too fucked to go. Shits going to hit the fan when I tell her.

You really don't need to be sedated to have most teeth pulled. Unless it's a gnarly mess and has to be surgically removed. The procedure is usually pretty painless and the relief is almost instantaneous. I had two teeth removed in quick succession and it really wasn't painful at all but the nice dentist still gave me happy drugs even though it didn't bother me after being removed.

Don't take anything before you go if you're going to be sedated unless the dentist instructed you to. I think that being sedated for this is a waste of money tbh, they'll give you a couple valium or xanax if you claim you're terrified of the dentist for before the procedure if you just ask.

For now try clove oil instead of cocaine. If it's an exposed nerve use some temporary dental filling material like you would for lost caps or lost fillings, it will take care of most of the pain. Also sensodyne toothpaste while you're dealing with this does help a bit.

Yeah the tooth is a mess but the sedation is on the NHS so it only cost me £50. I'm also having a couple of fillings while I'm under.

Ah, it would be ridiculous here.

Anyway, how much Ibuprofen are you taking now? The stuff we usually give out for this is 800mg... which, I'm not 100% but I think the Nurofen's are 200 or 220mg so you can pop about 4 of those at once. Just avoid the drinking or taking it with a bunch of paracetamol. Take it every to 6-8hrs and take it with a meal or a glass of milk.

Really it's pretty much the best pain relief you can get for this sort of pain OTC. It works better than codeine or DHC in my opinion, even though the other two are more fun.

My advice though is to try and call the dentist in the morning and let them know what's going on. They may elect to start you back on antibiotics or at least give you something else for the pain instead of just telling you to tough it out.

Anyway, hope you feel better, bud.

OP here.

Nurofen plus is 200mg/ 20mg codeine per tablet so I'm taking 2 every 4 hours and a co codamol which is 500mg paracetamol/ 50mg codeine in between. Why can't you mix paracetamol and ibuprofen?

You can.

Sorry, I should have worded that differently, that's misleading. I've been up for quite a while though. It's 5am here. Moving on.

Coke + paracetamol = bad.
Alcohol + paracetamol/ibuprofen = bad.

You can take any of these together in moderate doses and live anyway. Just don't go crazy. Those doses aren't crazy, even if you took them every four hours. And since it's only for a few days, I wouldn't sweat it. The only thing I might do differently is stagger the meds if you intend on taking both, and I would just for the codeine. Maybe take the co-codamol two hours after the nurofen. Although the codeine part won't be as fun like that, it'll be steady, and you might have better pain relief that way.
