A person who lacks a certain kind of interaction will go to great lengths to find any interaction, which does not have to be good. It's not like the person does this by choice, since all humans are social creatures. We don't live on small islands and never talk to each other. For a person who is lacking in social interactions this is the exact situation. They're on an island and it feels very very isolated. While some women can experience this, it is not that common among women and more prevalent among males. Name any reason why a man would be laughed at/ditched/ignored by other human beings and you have no parallel in women. You have more privilege than a man does because no one expects anything from you. Too bad it's like being in Special Ed, which I know quite well, the whole "low expectations" of the mainstreaming having this effect.
TL;DR: No one chooses to do things that are "weird" or "odd" for fun. Most people have a motive. Most (people) have reasons.
