Topic: Male 'feminists': why most are weirdos.
+Anonymous A — 12.5 years ago #32,501
I have heard a lot of hullabaloo recently going on in certain feminist circles about male "feminists". It seems everywhere I turn there's a story about some sort of male "feminist" engaging in some sort of seriously questionable and inappropriate behavior. See: Hugo Schwyzer. Quite predictably, radical feminists (as well as some more moderate feminists) have seized upon this as proof that men cannot be allies to feminists, that all men are pigs, etc.
The reason why male "feminists" tend to eventually be revealed as weird and creepy individuals doesn't really have anything to do with the male sex at large. It has more to do with the attitudes the feminist movement has towards men.
Male "feminist" allies will occasionally question why they have so much hate directed towards them, or why feminism has an apparently hypocritical stance on one particular subject. The answer they receive is usually that they need to shut the fuck up, feminism isn't for them, they need to be a better ally, yadda yadda blah blah.
Quite frankly, most men will be driven away from feminism by this. No one wants to be a part of a movement where you cannot question its precepts. Well, I take that back - No one wants to be part of a movement where you cannot question its precepts, unless one of those precepts is also that the demographic they belong to is unquestionable.
So the sane men are eventually driven away from feminism by the lack of answers and the lack of interest in any discussion critical of feminism (especially if that critic has *dun dun dun!!* a penis.) The men who do persevere in this environment - who deal with the hate and scorn placed upon them from a supposed "equality" movement - well, they're not quite all there.
They either:
1. Honestly believe that they are toxic and broken and that feminism needs to fix them and masculinity altogether, or
2. So desperate for female affection and attention that they are willing to accept any sort of abuse as long as they get it.
That is why male feminists tend to be so weird. It is because the feminist movement ensures that any men who do stick around are either insane or so lonely that sycophancy is an agreeable alternative to being alienated from women.
That is not to say there aren't reasonable male "feminists". You can rationalize abuse and hatred for quite a while. But eventually, they will leave. Especially beware of male "radfems" (or since most radical feminists exclude men, male feminists whose ideology tends towards the radical). No mentally healthy person hates their own gender that much. If you are getting your two minutes hate from a person who is hating on his own gender, rest assured that they are either insane or have ulterior motives.
