I like your employment of the theme of insane systemic worship overclouding good sense, conveyed in a way seemingly conventionally irrational to the reader, I'm not sure if it was your advertant intention to push the moral that this would be more compassionate than the current state of affairs of 'prevention' and 'saviourship'. Unless I'm overthinking this a bit. I do wonder if the protagonist himself is, in addition to this, completely delusional, and that this is an episode experienced with the benefit of insight into what's truly happening?
