Topic: Ubuntu help?

+grey !C.MxxuCiTo15.6 years ago #3,238

Ubuntu froze while installing updates, after reboot all my window borders are gone. Like the bar where the minimize, maximize, Close buttons are. I tried updating again but still got the same problem. Help please?

Reinstall it, usually when you get weird errors like this in Ubuntu the only way to fix it is reinstalltion or wait for some kind of fix. Using Ubuntu forums would def. be better help then this place.

Crap. It took a leet Ubuntu programmer to get webcam, keyboard, Wifi to work properly. I don't know him anymore so If I have to reinstall that means webcam, keyboard, and Wifi won't work. TL;DR: Reinstall is not an option.
Crap. I've never had problems in Ubuntu like this before....

Doesn't Maverick fix most of the really stupid driver issues that have been a problem for ages?

Reinstall Maverick from a USB.

Yes it does! But you see, the computer that I am talking about is a 900mhz netbook. XP Maverick would run about as well as Win7 Ultimate would on this thing. lol

what version of ubuntu are you running, and did you check to make sure your drive didn't fill up while downloading the updates?

9.10, and yes. AT the same time when I log in with a new user, that user has all the window borders, toolbars. SOO that shows that the files that make up the window borders/tool bars are not gone, but that for some reason they are just not showing up for my user.

sounds like your layout got borked. The window layouts are entirely configurable, so I know there's some way to re-add them if they get removed for whatever reason. I just don't know what that method is since I haven't been using Linux for 4 months. :(

I'm sorry about your cow.

Maybe your theme got fucked up? Try: System -> Preferences -> Appearences and optionally click on "Customize".

Or maybe it has something to do with Compiz Fusion. Do you have that installed? Google for "ubuntu 9.10 borders disappearing". Apparently a lot of people have the same problem.

Tried that.

OKAY OKAY OKAY OKAY NEW PROBLEM
I type "metacity replace" in terminal and it fixes the problem, BUT only if I keep the terminal window open. When I try to close it, it says that a processe if still running, and when I close it anyway, I lose all my window borders again.
Thoughts?

Do a backup of your data and reinstall, it's definitely faster than figuring out what went wrong while your upgrade fucked up. Support for 9.10 will stop in April anyway.

Try Alt+F2 -> metacity ---replace

(replace the large dash with two separate dashes)

@40,238 (grey !C.MxxuCiTo)
You already have a window manager (possible Compiz) running, and the command "metacity replace" kills that and replaces it with Metacity.

For now, do what @40,239 (Frank Usrs ) said. If you want your window borders when you reboot, try and add it to "System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications".

Or just uninstall Compiz. Or you could upgrade to 10.10.

I don't have compiz installed.
