Term Two Highlight: English Literature Research Paper
Rationale: A particularly important skill that you can learn now in readiness for post-secondary is the successful production of the research paper. Universities are research institutions no matter what faculty or discipline and there is an expectation that you know how to fulfill all of the necessary protocols for successful research paper writing.
Secondly, as an English 12 prescribed task by the Ministry, it is necessary to produce a research paper to finalize your school-based English 12 mark.
Thirdly, you are preparing for the Question 3 of the Advanced Placement Literature exam.
Resources: Humanities essays use the Modern Language Association Style Sheet for citations and works cited. The College Style Sheet is a condensed version of this style of documentation.
The Gale website offers one of the best step by step guides for completing a research paper.
Length: 1,000 words. (short by university standards).
Value: 100 marks
Due Date: Tuesday, 28th of January ( in a duo-tang, please)
Topic:
Select two novels or plays or a novel and play combo (you may use your journal selections-in fact I recommend that you do) and write an essay in which you compare/contrast some elements of the work. You may use Hamlet as one of the works. This may sound very general but it will give you the opportunity to focus on a specific element such as irony or setting. For example, a good specific thesis about Conrad would be: “Joseph Conrad in both Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim creates an atmosphere of mystery, foreboding and imminent danger to reflect his hatred of colonialism.”
*Note how, as in this case, essays about literature are almost always argumentative. An argumentative paper has three main qualities. First, it persuades an audience of the validity of its ideas. Secondly, it uses evidence (facts, reasoning and testimony from secondary sources) to explain and support its ideas. Thirdly, it has one thesis, an overall claim which creates coherence for every supporting point of evidence.
Sources: In literature, the work itself is considered the primary source while references to published criticism are secondary. This paper expects you to use at least three secondary sources. Remember your insight is your thesis. Secondary sources are for agreement, controversy, illustrating a variety of different approaches to the same work, or author and to provide support for your own point of view. By consulting, citing and quoting pertinent critical works, you give your essay greater authority. Use Easy-Bib to ease the pain.
Over the Winter Break:
Think about what you might want to write about. What two works will you use?
