On the surface the online game "Neopets" appears innocuous enough... it's a time-suck to throw disaffected and heavily medicated youths in front of for hours while you attend to more important matters. As with so many things which appear wholesome, fluffy, and friendly on the surface, Neopets hides a much more sinister side beneath it's disgustingly adorable facade... and beyond that cold dead yet blinking computer monitor and cute depictions of disturbing otherworldly monstrosities there is nothing more than good ole' fashioned Capitalist indoctrination and Western decadence. FACTS:
Neopets champions and encourages Usury
-See The National Neopian Bank
-Pretends to be opposed to enslavement while championing the very thing it halfheartedly feigns to abhor (See Enslaved Neopets, Dr Sloth, and consider the players role with his own enslaved Neopets which it then forces to fight to the death against other "monsters" for the amusement of players).
Encourages Western Decadence
-The player is awarded Neopoints (a digital currency used as a reward and means to further mindless consumption of valueless intangible digital goods).
-The player is encouraged to spend Neopoints (NP) he or she has earned from playing games which are not so subtle ads for Nickelodeon (demented capitalist pigdogs that own neopets) and their partners. NP are also awarded for actually watching adverts in game (their target audience is oblivious to the egregious mind manipulation taking place and how their experiences in game will effect out of game activities beyond their role as current and future capitalist consumers and being detrimental to physical health and social growth.
-Players are encouraged to Gamble (See scratchcards, neopian lottery, "wheel of fortune" games, slots, "carnie games", etc).
-Players are taught that violence is the best form of problem resolution (See "battledome").
-Players are encouraged to build "neohomes" which serve no purpose beyond acting as simulated dwellings which they may purchase digital goods with which to decorate these deceitful digital domiciles.
-Players are also encouraged to set up digital shops and learn about capitalist strategies to manipulate markets and increase profits (artificial scarcity, hoarding, etc).
-Players are exposed to magical thinking (magic, witchcraft, monsters, miracles, enchanted scrolls and items, etc) and discouraged from thinking logically apart from a few trivial ad-laden puzzles where the answers are shared amongst players on forums rather than actually being solved by the player.
-Players are rewarded for good and frequent attendance throughout the day (Various "rewards" are given to players for checking and rechecking different features of the site throughout the day).
-Poverty is a sort of running joke within Neopets, there is even a Soup kitchen for new players or those simply down or their luck (having less than 3k NP in total).
-While NP cannot be used to purchase anything outside of neopets, real world currency can be used to purchase valueless goods within neopets.
