Its because he came so close to fooling her that he was a decent human being. He thought she was under control, would disassociate from her family, and become totally reliant on him alone. Which is what he wanted.
She wised up though, and now he realises he'll never come close to that level of control that he craves. So he acts like he is now, still trying to exert control and failing.
He still thinks that if he can ruin her other relationship, she'll have no option than to go back to him. He's clearly delusional though.
