Minimum wage/work hard. Study hard/still work hard. Once the equal salary movement takes hold and there are no incentives to work hard or learn everybody will realize that the person who works hard in any way is a sucker.

Sounds like your mom had money and then didn't anymore she was using credit and probably got evicted. Maybe not you but I've seen that kind of thing with plenty of neighbors.
