i'll take a part-time job to fund fun times, tuition is paid for, living expenses will be negotiated.
9-5 is easier than this, believe me

Besides, minimum wage is always above $9/hr, over $10 in the provinces I'll be in, a fair bit more than the $7.25/hr you earn.

Would you go down with the ship instead of bailing to the future Mars/Moon colony or some new space station? I think if everyone else is going it's because of that colonialist spirit that suggests progress is raping whatever new place you go to after you've used up your own resources. The oil doomers say we have until 2050 (some suggest sooner) for oil to run out and the shit to hit the fan. Economic collapse or nuclear war sound fun too. Or maybe they were poor? Thinking back to natural disasters usually the people that don't evacuate were indigent and perhaps cut off from a lot of society. Uhm an appropriate segueway that might be suitable with your theme would be for the kid to be afraid of something. Maybe they're afraid of the dark and want a nightlight when they're being put to bed. The person that tells them (an older sibling maybe) might be opposed to it and explain that fear/cowardice is why they're stuck on a dying world, because of the fear their parents felt. Or maybe the parents disagreed about what to do but would rather stay together than break up during tumultuous times. Still one could be a little upset/frustrated over the decision to stay.
