If transgenderism is a genuine condition, it's proof that gender is not a social construct. The core idea is that trans people have "male" or "female" brains in spite of their sex, not that they've chosen their gender on a whim.

The general way around this is that transgender people may want to express themselves slightly different from the traditional gender expectations ; however as they're already a minority that receives disproportionate violence, drug abuse, etc, it is easier to assimilate to societies version of a gender role that is closer to the role they wish to play.
So they may appear to be acting in the binary gender but are just doing so because of the situation society has created; to live a normal life it is preferable to co-opt the female gender expectations of others and be treated normal than live in societies eye as "A man being weird."
That is how you can be transgender and against the idea of gender.
However there are plenty of trannies that want to be treated like a girl and throughly enjoy the gender expectation in society and want to prolong them. Those trannies suck but the left is such a shambles if you criticise these trannies you're excommunicated.

The left dug itself this hole when it took the wrong turn with privilege. Privilege was essentially the reframing of an argument of discrimination to counter middle class people who said "well I'M not the one discriminating blacks and women" to show they still had it better than some minorities despite no actively "discriminating"; discriminating being the idea that dominated the space.
The modern feminist thoughtwave of privilege and closed spaces brought the idea that men could not comment on what was oppressing as they weren't the oppressed group. Only the victims of oppression could define what was oppressive; what words, terms, saying, media, etc. The idea of feminist friendly or feminist only spaces continued this line of thought that there needed to be spaces where their basic ideas weren't questioned constantly so that they could move the moment forward - so they weren't constantly fighting with people with the opposite view. In feminist spaces views on victim-blaming and rape for example; they don't want to argue with MRAs constantly.
However the trans movement took this exact line on the idea of "gender-identity" and the associated elements to do with transgender and transexualism. Cis people aren't experiencing the issue and as such cannot comment on it; saying it's a mental illness is ignorant oppression by a less oppressed group. You aren't a member of this oppressed group so you can't argue calling it a mental illness isn't oppressive. And acting as a safe space for trans discussion of these subjects are considered oppression and can not be done inside the space - with left groups aiming to be a safe space for all it has basically pushed all discussion out and lead to the "be whatever you want to be!" circlejerk on tumblr.
The long term affects of the seeming love for the gender-binary by members of the trans* community has been a topic that has lead radical-feminist elements to appear to argue that abolishing gender would achieve what the transgenders want; but they are attacked on the grounds above because they are not trans* and as such shouldn't have an opinion on them despite their impact on the winder movement.

Not just trannies. Almost everyone likes to be treated as their gender. Only a minority of radically ignorant feminists still believe gender can be "abolished" in the wake of David Reimer and similar cases.
