A CROWN Court Judge has said a female bar worker “very enterprisingly despatched” a drunk man by hitting him over the head with a pool cue after he wielded a broken glass and threatened her.
As a result of the incident last March, Daniel McElroy (41) of Main Street, Strabane was sentenced to 12 months in prison which was suspended for two years.
Judge Jeffrey Miller QC said he would have imposed an immediate two year sentence but imposed the suspended jail term because McElroy had spent over 34 weeks in custody since the incident.
McElroy was convicted of making threats to kill two women, possession of an offence weapon, namely a broken glass, and causing damage to an optic. He has a substantial criminal record with 39 convictions since 1988 including offences of violence, making threats to kill and public disorder.

A VICTORIA Bridge man who fled a police checkpoint because he was already banned from driving has been jailed for six months.
Niall Edgar (21) of Victoria Manor was sent to prison on Thursday after admitting a number of driving offences arising out of an incident earlier this year.
On May 20 police were conducting a checkpoint at Victoria Bridge when the defendant approached in a Volkswagon van.
Edgar ignored all signals to stop and drove on, despite the best efforts of an officer to grab the keys from the ignition.
He pulled in at a yard further up the road but gave a false name when asked for his details. Officers however recognised him from previous encounters and during interview he admitted already being banned from driving. Edgar further admitted having no insurance, taking the van without authority and failing to stop for police.
Legal representative Stephen Mooney said his client found himself in a “most unenviable position”, particularly given his poor previous record. Mr Mooney argued though that probation would be a more suitable sentence than immediate prison.
District Judge Liam McNally disagreed.
He said that the defendant had ignored every order handed down by the courts in the past.
“You have displayed no regard for any order handed down by this court or the County Court. You have sent yourself to prison,” the judge said.
For driving while disqualified and having no insurance, Edgar was jailed for four months. Two months of a suspended sentence were also activated.
Fines totalling £350 were also imposed. The defendant was bailed to appeal the sentence in the sum of £500.
