Prior to Jesus, the name 'Peter' (or Pyotr/Petros) did not exist as a name at all. It was just a noun. The Aramaic 'kephas', translated into Greek as 'petros', means a rock or stone. Jesus bestowed the title upon Simon (later known as 'Peter', Saint Peter, the founder of the Christian church), with the famous instruction that "Thou art peter...and on this rock I will build my church" (Matthew 16, versus 18-19). This line is now inscribed around St Peter's Basilica in Rome. Even most Catholics don't understand the meaning of Jesus' words, or understand why Simon's name suddenly changes to Peter in the Bible.
So 'Peter' never actually existed as a name before Jesus. It was the Aramaic word for 'rock'. Everyone here knows someone called Peter, which is why it will now be very silly of people to deny that this was interesting for them, and they're not going to retell it and pass it off as something they read in a book, rather than a tidbit they read on tinychan.org.
