turn down graphics detail, close your web browser, etc.
also, if you're at least over 20 it should be fine. high fps is only critical in fast-paced games like shooters or racers.

if cpu, memory, and disk aren't a bottleneck, it's your graphics card
since it's a laptop you can't just replace the graphics card

some people, including myself, hate being tied to a desk. i wanna do shit in bed, on the couch, in the living room, at university, ...
and buying a proper laptop is still cheaper than buying a laptop and a desktop pc
also i had a desktop + laptop setup like a decade ago and it was a pain in the ass cause while it's easy to synchronize files, you never have the right programs on the right machine
it just sucks

Yeah, I get that. It's just laptop gaming tends to suffer from the heat unless you start looking at systems in the $1000+ range where they've got cooling systems designed for portable gaming. She could get a desktop capable of running the sims for about half.
I rarely have the program issue since I keep portable versions or installers on my flash drives, but then I've got 3 flash drives and a 16GB SD card.

I got a thinkpad w520 with 256gb ssd + 1 tb hdd, 16 gig ram, an i7, and desktop grade graphics with a full HD 15" screen and i'm more than happy with it, but it totalled up to about 1500
it's a real workhorse
that combined with a docking station and a 32" LCD tv mounted on top of my desk is just awesome
