Wayyyyyy back when Hughes Malibu Research labs made me an offer I said "That Much?" HR manager whispered to never ever say anything like that again.

Going in I had no clue what Engineers were paid and I knew 100's of them re my ham radio hobby but it never occurred to me to ask about salary's.

Damn so many years n so many numbers. At the tyme I was working part tyme for what is now the Ralphs supermarket chain and making more per hour then full tyme clerks cause they paid a union bonus for part tyme - which seems really strange 2day. And I had only completed 2 years towards my BSEE and wanted my last two years to be at UCLA but as going up steps to apply in person there were multiple Aerospace companies with card tables looking to trap Engineers. Huge amounts of DOD dollars at the tyme. And Hughes was #1 for NSA CIA money & later #1 for a new even much much much bigger secrete agency.

So I looked at three companies and said no re driving in2 Sun in morning - The other was on a hot day when the test equipment had to be turned off (self shut off re thermal trips) and kind of ugly n dirty.

Hughes on the other hand was pristine labs up on the bluff of Malibu Ocean - Just amazing - I told myself I wood pay to work there and really really meant that.

It was years later that I discovered my starting pay was higher then IF I had the BSEE with a couple of years pay raise tossed in. Because I did not have the BSEE - I was given a test which I over heard in whispers in HR was the best score ever - Ham Radio was my Ace in hole cause you had to take mean FCC tests which included serious math at the tyme.

Number will come to me with thought but those old resumes are so long gone. I continued to list Hughes re security clearance but its been almost forever since I have thought of salary back then. It was sure more then I needed to live on - Engineers were buying new homes and married with 3-4 kids n I was single.

And of course Hughes paid all costs plus a nice bonus for me to complete my BSEE. Qualcomm and many others still do that kind of thing - Full pay and more and all costs - books etc while working.
