Topic: What is the moral of this tale?
+Anonymous A — 12.8 years ago #28,087
In 1917, a young British soldier named Henry Tandy shot and wounded a German soldier. Walking up to him, suffering on the ground, Tandy intended to finish the job and kill him, but seeing the defenseless creature writhing in pain in the mud, Tandy spared the young German's life. He gave him some water and supplies and told him to get back to his base, whereupon he'd be shipped back home to safety.
The young German's name was Adolf Hitler. After the war, Hitler requested a photo of Henry Tandy be sent to him, and he kept it all his life.

Henry Tandy was clearly a hero.

the moral of this particular story is.....do not believe everything you read on the internet..

What about what we read in Ian Kershaw's Booker Prize winning biography of Hitler, plus Alan Bullock's seminal study of Hitler, plus even Nazi sympathizer David Irving's book 'Hitler's War', plus...you get it, I suppose. Can we believe those? Or are you one of those "Don't believe anything, y'all, gubmint dun lyin' te y'all!"

how do urban myths...or other mistruths become well known? maybe it is because they are repeated several times?
so.....just because more than one person said it....that makes it true?

No - if the process of analysis, evaluation and historiography deems it fact, then it becomes true.
Let me walk you through this - the 2nd world war formally ended in 1945. Do you agree with this? Or do you consider it debatable?

1) Hitler let something like 300,000 British soldiers go and return to Britain instead of killing them or imprisoning them.
2) Without Hitler, Germany would've had a Marxist revolution. The USSR murdered 100,000,000 in their death camps. The death tolls would be worse.
