I only hear about people through mainsteam media or /cwc/ (and tc, by extension). Overall, net media is just as biased as the mainstream, but instead of being driven by wealthy interest groups, it's driven by immature bloggers who foster/fester an echo-chamber for themselves by flaming and/or removing anything that doesn't fit their worldview exactly. /cwc/ was the middle ground.
