It's just easier to browse chans in public places (even w/ privacy screens) than it is to browse porn. Personally I'm pretty much desensitized to it. If it's not in person I won't usually get excited but I still appreciate it for it's aesthetic/artistic value of course.

Really? I always feel like chans are minefields for stuff to get you in trouble when browsing in public.
Like, tc is covered with "niggers" text, and porn tends to appear fairly often too. Since I don't use facebook, it always feels like wikipedia is the only safe place to browse.

Text is innocuous. Whereas images... especially flashes of fleshy bits just jumps out a little more than the word "nigger".
Besides it's easy to explain away someone being rude/vulgar online but if a woman is being fucked by some amputee's nub on your screen... well even if you have a very good excuse people will still have their doubts.
If I do have something a little risque pop-up on my screen and someone notices I just try to smile and say some bullshit about "modern art" which is perfectly meaningless but sounds reasonable enough to the layman. These beta blockers I'm taking help me keep a better poker face anyway.
