Topic: The new "Batman Vs. Superman" movie to draw inspiration from "The Dark Knight Returns"?
+Anonymous A — 13.1 years ago #25,338
It appears that the upcoming 2015 movie which rumored to be titled, "Batman Vs. Superman" will draw inspiration from the 1986 comic book "The Dark Knight Returns" by Frank Miller which was adapted as an animated movie in 2012 and 2013. This comic book and cartoon often gets criticized for how they portrayed the man of steel as being able to be defeated by the man known as Batman as well as being a puppet for Ronald Reagan.

Batman didn't beat Superman in The Dark Knight Returns. Green Arrow did.
Oliver shot the Kryptonite filled arrow at Superman. If Oliver didn't send that arrow. Batman would have been destroyed. Batman should be allowing GA to give that speech to Superman.
"The one man who beat you." - False. Green Arrow did. Plus, Superman was still alive, a moment later, Bats almost had a heart attack, therefore, without Arrow's help. Superman won the battle.

Also, "draws inspiration" could literally mean anything. There's no real continuity in Man of Steel to begin with, primarily because WB is just trying to push this out. It's not a direct sequel to Man of Steel, that's for sure.
Zack Snyder is quoted as saying, "However, regardless of how I feel about Superman, ultimately I have to go along with the direction that Warner Bros. thinks is best", which translates to whatever cash grab is easiest.

The ultimate irony of the Batman/Superman movie taking inspiration from that overrated story is that the Superman in "Man of Steel" directly challenged the authority of the government as opposed to being their puppet.

So how long do you suspect we'll wait for a direct sequel to Man of Steel?

No idea. The possibility of introducing Miller into the situation means they can just as easily kill the franchise off at their own discretion.

I've heard complaints that Frank Miller's Batman and Superman were out of character. Your thoughts on this?

The Superman of TDKR is jingoistic. He is a color guard. He is not spineless or stupid. He is simply misguided. Batman sees him as cowardly because he refused to become a "creature of conscience." Superman is a morally upright protector who would never dictate the course of human kind (even though he could with ease).
Much as the story is revered as a classic next to the Watchmen of 1986, that Superman of TDKR never made much sense in one respect. He's a puppet of the government not an outright a tool or superthug, but he's responsible for ripping off Green Arrow's arm?
Miller must've really had a low opinion on Superman, making him being a stooge of the government if he's capable of doing that to a former JL member. A morally upright protector who would never stoop that low to uphold Justice or human laws, if he suddenly went all super-republican by any means necessary and turned on his fellow superheroes and friends.
Miller created stupidly forced set of circumstances, where even the most ardent Superman fan and supporter wants to 'vote' and go for the underdog in Batman here in this case and see Superman taken down by Batman who's the last crusader against a amorally corrupt or totalitarian Superman who's doing, the man's bidding without question!
Utter crap in terms of Superman ever being like that.

Has there ever been a comic where it was the opposite and Batman was portrayed more as an antagonist?

Idk, I'd imagine you could just use Google and ask 'Has Batman ever killed anyone?' or something. There have been instances where Batman as a force is considered antagonistic, if that's what you mean. First thing that comes to mind is the Impostors storyline, which basically is that two rival gangs of Batman and Joker impostors start street wars and Batman concludes that ultimately he creates his own enemies rather than stops them. That's probably not the answer you're looking for, though.

I think Batman might have been an antagonist in the Superman Red Son comic. I never read it though.

Alternate universe. Even Batzarro shot his own parents.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Comedian from Watchmen) is also being considered:

Not a terrible choice either, at least it's not fucking Armie Hammer.
