Javascript will be fairly useless if you intend to make a decent site, as any non-retard will have it disabled.

@OP
Are you thinking of learning a language to create web applications with, using some sort of framework (e.g., Rails or node.js)? In that case I'd learn JavaScript, since 1) node.js is the hip thing right now and 2) you'd be using the same language server-side and client-side. On the other hand, Ruby and Rails have matured a lot lately, plus Ruby is better suited for trivial scripting tasks.

This would be true 10 years ago. JavaScript is no longer used for just trivial stuff and keeping it disabled would be more likely to induce a headache than not.

Sorry, but I don't think most people disable javascript.

JavaScript.
New EMCAscript standard should be coming 2014 expanding the language.
JavaScript is positioning itself as the standard for webapps, WebGL content, and the language of cross-device apps.
As Anon F says with node.js you're using the same language for server-side and client-side which is handy when using newer html5 features like websockets.
There has been an explosion of frameworks for client-side development handling MVC, Binding, and everything else; alongside jQuery etc.
Just make sure after you've trained a bit to read "Javascript : The Good parts" by Douglas Crockford
It outlines the language from its roots and in a more Computer Science understanding of the language.
Then read up on : Prototyping, patterns, and the books of John Resig or Stoyan Stefanov

what about ruby

If JS is disabled it's probably due to a browser's privacy concerns.

java unless you just strictly want to do web development in which case just stick with ruby, java has cool cross-platform stuff going for it so its handy to know but if you dont absolutely need to then dont bother cause its a fucking headache, ruby is alot more smooth

Damn a topic which is aged'd so I suppose I should add this - On phone for 45 mins with a VP who has 8000 programmers reporting to
HER and she had to put me on hold for a few minutes so I drop in to TC and read this topic - She returns on line and languages she manages run a super wide range - Just about anything anyone has used in last two decades she manages - So I asked her about Javascript and she said
JavaScript is a crime and should not be allowed anywhere at any time.
Of course she goes on to say she employees many many Software people who are tasked with ritting JavaScript and of course a slew of people doing Java.
I read OP topic to her and she said - If its a student asking which to learn then the student should simply try this with Google Search
1: Search for Jobs "Javascript"
2: Search for Jobs "Ruby"
Look for comparison of Modules used in total for Ruby vs Javascript.
Both are a lot like religions. People take their religion
Seriously So asking a Ruby programmer wot they think about Javascript will result in pain. and visa versa
I R no Programmer - I am a Analogue design RF Communications hardware Engineer. Everything I work with is controlled by a SLEW of different languages. I had to larn Fortran wayyyyy back and then as C and then C++ ended up king of languages which I said to self wtf? I wood get boggled down with Syntax errors. Ended up doing a huge amount of PERL cause its just easy to learn and more easy to abuse.
VP Gal I was talking to wood love to get all Perl out of stuff she manages cause its used to patch other stuff that should be fixed directly but Perl wins cause its so fast to solve problems and keep projects coming in on time.
Phone call was her mad as fuck re me using a Perl script to quickly fix a breadboard connected with clip leads in a Verizon Bunker running a Alpha version of something beyond 4GLTE and her company which is NOT Verizon handed me the finished breadboard to clip in locally and
They were to busy to support my need to fix their C++ So I just parsed in my quick Perl Script and all works terrific
However she has tools to lookC at wot I am doing and now is mad as fuck at me cause - well cause -
OP if u are looking at future re time expended u want to do wot She suggested. Who is hiring more Ruby or Javascript -
Also in my opinion only - U damn well no in future some other language is going to take over one day - Which of the two languages will most likely make it more easy for you to move on and learn.
I get boggled down is Syntax - Often so similar going back to Fortran - C C++ but alas one minor case change.
I need lots of Syntactic sugar so when u rite something please for people like me use lots of it

he said he was boggled down with c++ which is hilarious considering that is one of the most common programming languages
