It wouldn't be impossible to draw a holstered pistol while on your back. Most people carry concealed weapons on their right side slightly towards the rear (just past where your hand would fall if dropped to your side, this is an easy spot to draw from, offers decent concealment, and doesn't impede movement or drive the pistol into your side when bending, etc). However it would be extremely difficult to draw a weapon if someone was straddling you but not impossible. If Zimmerman brandished the firearm before he was engaged then this is a no-no in FL but we have nothing to go on apart from Zimmerman's statement. It's possible that Martin may have saw the firearm during the altercation as even with an IWB holster if your shirt is lifted a firearm can be easy to spot, or it can be possible to tell someone is carrying if a firearm is "printing" on the clothing, or if Zimmerman reached for it or had his hand towards his rear at the time of or before the altercation.

The truth is we will never know what exactly transpired beyond some "creepy ass cracka" or apparent wannabe cop/judge followed a possible neerdowell and ultimately fatally shot him. They began tussling, and Zimmerman shot Martin at close range after sustaining some minor injuries. When Zimmerman discharged the firearm Martin was on top of him (per the pathologist, Vincent DiMaio's testimony) and probably had the upperhand in the altercation up to that point.

The prosecution's case has been poor at best and having lying witnesses (caught in said lies) and their star witness (the last person to speak to Martin while he was alive) being uncooperative, making it clear that Martin had brought "race" into the issue, only made damning and damaging statements for the state's case.

To me what is concerning is Zimmerman's history (public records indicate there may have been some domestic violence in his past in addition to an incident of assault on a police officer and resisting arrest). Maybe he had a predisposition for violent behavior? He did contact the authorities before confronting Martin to report "suspicious activity" which the police appear to have ignored altogether.

IMO the entire incident could have been avoided if Zimmerman would have only observed and reported and/or retreated. I will also concede that exiting his vehicle was a poor decision on Zimmerman's part. Still gun control is a hot issue and people are using this incident to further their own agendas. After making the decision to follow Martin which is definitely what led to the altercation, regardless of who instigated the actual physical scuffle, under Florida state law Zimmerman had the right to defend his person and/or property and to use deadly force.

I also believe that if Zimmerman had the firearm drawn beforehand that Martin would have been compliant instead of confrontational.

According to DiMaio's testimony Martin's shirt was in contact with the pistol and Martin was either on top of or bent over Zimmerman. DiMaio determined that Martin's shirt was hanging a few inches away from his body considering where the bullet entered the shirt and where the entry wound was on his body.

Compliance or flight, either/or would be a normal response I think. However because of the injuries Zimmerman sustained and how close the pistol was when it was discharged makes me think that Martin was not attempting to retreat which suggests to me that Martin wasn't initially aware of the presence of a firearm.

I think alternative responses would typically be the result of conditioning/training.
