As far as the active part if Negi wants to be a shut-in even with small living quarters he could still be active and healthier anyway. People practically give away unused weights and old exercise bikes because they had the money but not the will to change their reality and it reminds them they've failed everything they've ever started. Kind of like when your madre gave you up to those strange relatives in the West because while she had the means to smother you she had not the will.
