Topic: My truck died.
+Omen !!hnQvReR0M — 13.4 years ago #22,387
Driving home Tues had a little hesitation on acceleration. Then a little more, then none, it acted just like it was out of gas when I had a half tank in it. Pulled off the freeway and called a tow truck that took me home. Tried all day Wed to contact my mechanic buddy to no avail. Waited for my other freind to get off work so I could go get the fuel pump I thought went bad.
As we were at the parts store, I saw that another mechanic I know was at the bar, so I went in and asked if he could help me fix my truck and he said he could do it today. Awesome. So last night I did all the prep work, dropped the tank, unhooked all the electrical, the fuel lines, and filler tube. Just my luck I managed to kink both the outlet and the return fuel lines when I lowered the tank. Perfect. Not a real big deal, concidering the rust and corrosion on the lines, I never would have got them off in one piece anyway.
So Dave comes over and we go to NAPA to get new fuel lines. They have to be ordered and won't be in til 1700. Meh, can install the new pump and sendung unit while we wait. Drink beer and bullshit for 4hrs and go get the lines. Get the tank half way back in it's straps only to find the supply line is 8" too short. Crap. Call NAPA they tell me they can't get a supply line for my trucks wheelbase. WTF? The return line was right. Why not the supply? Go back to NAPA to get something to splice the line and the guy says "let me see the old line". I show him (again) and he goes in the back and pulls the exact fuel line I need. Nice. Get everything put back together and running, then look at the old fuel pump. Huh. I don't remember disconecting the groung wire when I took this off.
Tl;dr
Fuel pump/sending unit: $230.00
Fuel lines: $215.00
Fuel filter: $7.60
Labor: $60.00
Lost wages: $500.00
Moral of this saga: Check your ground wire before replacing everything.

op
b4 beating self up over this. Connect fuel pump up to 12 volts and feed it some water n see if it pumps n pumps.
So far not enough evidence to convict a broken faulty ground wire.
I as well once blamed a fuel pump for being faulty. Replaced and a few months late same kinda problem. Turned out to be a trapped ground return line jammed under a relay. Bump in the road wood start the intermittent arc that stopped fuel flow. Just was lucky to hear it arc when I was close enough to it.

The timing of the realization that the ground was broken is a little off, we discovered it when we went to connect the new ground, it just fit better at the end of my statement.

The best part of yesterday was the weather. Partly cloudy and mid 70's. Usually it's freezing when my vehicles break down.

It's usually burning up here. Fortunately I haven't had it happen in while. Knock on wood and all that.
The ladyfriend's muffler dropped yesterday but she seems to have bad luck with cars. Ghetto rigged it until I can get it wielded.
Its the little things that make a man go insane.

pffffft.....it is ALWAYS going to be something....with an automobile.....if it is not one thing...it will be another.....just part of life (for now).....I wish they would hurry up and get the whole hovercraft (think The Jetsons) show on the road.........all they really have left to conquer is how to keep people from going just anywhere in the hovercrafts.......sure sensors on the roadways would work but people need to be able to move about their private properties and so do owners...employees and customers of businesses.....I bet it will all get worked out soon..

STFU, Bert!
I just spent more in one day fixing my truck than you've ever paid for a vehicle.

@268,585 (D)
Shouldn't you be posting a recent pic for your lady fans on SC or giving yourself an everclear enema about now?

Public transit sounds good but I don't think they would let me load all my tools on a bus.

People would hate you if the trains were full but that's really it. Automobiles are far better if you've got loads of stuff though, yeah.

No trains in this city. I can't imagine putting the contents of my truck on a bus. Too much stuff.
